Experience a scenic journey through the heart of Bluffton on the historic New River Linear Trail.
This 3.4 mile route, once used by the Seaboard Air Line Railway, is now a shared pathway for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike. Walk through the Sun City development and witness the remnants of the past trail along the power lines. Then, safely pass through S.C. Route 46/170 underpass around the midpoint of the trail. Finally, bask in the beauty of the New River as the trail concludes at its banks. The Heritage at New Riverside community also benefits from this one-of-a-kind trail, providing residents with endless possibilities for outdoor exploration.
Although it’s only 3.4 miles, this unpaved trail is perfect for nature lovers looking to explore some breathtaking scenery. The route takes you through a mix of hardwood forest and swampland where you can encounter a variety of wildlife including turkeys, deer, and waterfowl. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot an armadillo or alligator! Don’t forget to bring wider tires to navigate the flat trail, and keep your eyes open for the grid of channels left behind by long-abandoned rice fields near the trail’s end at the New River.
The trail informs its travelers about Bluffton’s rich history with informative signs along the way.
Whether you prefer to cycle or hike, this trail is fit for all adventurers. Don’t leave your furry friends behind – dogs are welcome to join you on this unforgettable journey.
New River Linear Trail is only accessible by a hidden driveway off of S.C. Route 46. The parking lot consists of 13 gravel parking spots, two paved spaces for those with unique abilities, and 10 divine mulch overflow spaces. The cherry on top? You’ll have easy access to the trail, thanks to the short and sweet mulch path that leads the way.
