Town of Bluffton declares June 19 as “Juneteenth Day,” Town holiday.
Town of Bluffton Mayor Lisa Sulka, on behalf of Bluffton’s Town Council, issued a proclamation declaring Friday, June 19, 2020 as Juneteenth Day in the Town of Bluffton. The proclamation also designates Friday as a town holiday.
Town offices will remain open on Friday. The proclamation was issued for town leaders to formalize their commitment to helping end racism in our country and community. “We recognize that there is so much work to be done yet to address and correct inequities and social injustices,” said Mayor Sulka. “We hope that this proclamation will encourage other lawmakers at all levels to not only begin the conversation, but to work toward meaningful solutions as well.”
It also highlights the Juneteenth Celebration, a celebration of emancipation and freedom. The Bluffton MLK Observance Committee sponsors the event annually. This year’s event will take place Saturday, June 20 at Bluffton’s Eagles Field from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The celebration features more than 40 vendors. African drummers, Gullah storytelling, voter registration, census support will be onsite. Information on how to be an advocate for the Gullah community will also be at the event.
