Award-winning watercolorist David Rankin will lead an art demo and a three-day workshop in July at the SOBA gallery. Rankin is a nationally recognized artist who also served as the judge for SOBA’s 27th Annual Judged Show.
Rankin will show off the elegant magic of watercolor through an artful combination of soft and sharp visual effects in “Watercolor Dazzle,” an art demo that will be held at 2 p.m. July 3 at the Center for Creative Arts, located next door to the SOBA Gallery in Old Town Bluffton. The demo is free for SOBA members and $10 for non-members.
Immediate and advanced painters also might like to take advantage of Rankin’s transparent watercolor workshop called “Painting Lowcountry” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 6-8 at the Center for Creative Arts. This 3-day transparent watercolor workshop aims to improve your brush strokes, washes and blends. Students will work from reference to sketch, to gray study and to completed watercolors — learning to direct the eye, simplify complicated images, create depth, and develop memorable paintings. Rankin’s bold and distinctive painting style as well as his amazing instructional procedures make his workshops both artistically rewarding and fun. The cost for the three-day workshop is $325 for SOBA members and $350 for non-members.
