Proposed Jasper County Port!
10/28/2008
The proposed Jasper Port recently received a $5.3 million contract which is expected to help the planned port reach a new level of success. Project coordinators hired the consulting firm Moffatt & Nichol to serve as the program manager for the port project. Approval of the contract serves as a critical first step towards construction of the new port.
The firm’s first priority will be to move forward with a study that would result in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ release of its easement over the port site. The 1,500-acre site is currently used to house dredge spoil from the Savannah River.
Once completed, the Jasper port is expected to bring $2.3 billion in regional earnings to support capital investment in the Lowcountry and to process up to six million shipping containers per year, rivaling nearby ports in Savannah and Charleston.
